Summary

A famous documentary crew hires the Rocinante to tag along with the rest of humanity's explorers and be where the action is。 Pretty soon, things get crazy, as things do in these books。 What could go wrong when humanity pokes the unknown thing with a stick to see what it does? But I suppose that's science。 After arriving at the Ring, an Earth ship gets blown up。 Everyone attributes this to the bad vibes coming from the Ring, but someone has framed Holden's crew for this attack。 What is pretty much a futuristic "deep-fake" of Holden claiming responsibility and threatening no other ships to come closer makes the round to other ships。 They shut down the broadcast, but you know the saying: anything on the Internet is forever。 The Rocinante crew just can't catch a break, it seems。 To escape being blown up into their component atoms, Holden takes the Rocinante through the ring in a last ditch evasion maneuver。 Except, the rest of humanity follows, because they are pissed at Holden。 It's just a race to detain him at this point。 The Ring: The Ring, not amused by spacecraft accelerating what it perceives as aggressively towards it, casually changes the laws of physics, arresting every ship dead in its tracks。 Everything in the ship gets slammed around in the sudden, violent stop。 People are very fragile。 It doesn't go well。 All crews get decimated with deaths and injuries。 The ships are basically held hostage by a sort of gravitational force via the station, which I think was the Ring's way of giving humanity a time-out。While everyone is zooming in after Holden, and paying for it in the process, Holden's going to the heart of the "Ring," what seems to be a semi-organic station of sort。 There, a ghost comes to him: Detective Miller。 Miller is dead, but the intelligence of the Ring has chosen to speak to him in the form of the dead man, warning humanity away from what turns out to be a gate, one of many nodes in a network a now dead alien species used to traverse the galaxy with ease billions of years ago。 Powerful enough--with enough energy--to destroy stars if anything threatened the larger network。In the aftermath of the mass casualty event resulting in much damage to ships and humans alike, the OPA flagship, the Behemoth decides to attack the gate in return, in an attempt to destroy it and protect humanity on the other side of the gate。 Problem is, the ships would be stranded on the other side, unable to go home again。 And not everyone wants to make that sacrifice。The battle lines are drawn。Plus, you know, we know the Ring can destroy whole stars and any such escalation in force against it by humanity would doom the rest of humanity (aka the whole solar system)。 Holden and his allies are trying to stop the other side from enacting this mass-suicide, and it quickly turns to a shoot-out inside of a very thin layer of metal protecting all of them from the void。 Not to mention, his side is severely out-gunned and out-numbered, and everyone is pretty banged up from the sudden-stop incident。 Oof。Who's going to win out in the end?I won't spoil the ending。 Just read it! It's quite the ride from start to finish。(Start from book 1, Leviathan Wakes, if you need to catch up。 Trust me, the events of this book will make more sense that way。) 。。。more

In the first two books I kept thinking, "This is interesting and all, but when will something happen?" From about a third of the way into this book until the end, I mostly thought, "This is stressful, when does everybody get to take a breather?" Book 3 has a much faster pace。 Corey has been pretty strong on characters and their motivations throughout the series, but he really shines in that area in Abaddon's Gate。 It's also refreshing to see a realistic and sympathetic treatment of theists along In the first two books I kept thinking, "This is interesting and all, but when will something happen?" Got to do this one as a book as well as an audio book。 Humans!! This is certainly not a bad book。 It's good and i enjoyed it but it is disappointing when compared to the last novel in the series。 It starts off really well, I thought all the new characters were interesting and the premise of the book was intriguing。 I thought I was in for another barnstormer。 But then around halfway through it just fizzled out to the point where it felt like it was written by somebody else。 All three new characters turned in to pointless filler content to progress the story a This is certainly not a bad book。 It's good and i enjoyed it but it is disappointing when compared to the last novel in the series。 It starts off really well, I thought all the new characters were interesting and the premise of the book was intriguing。 I thought I was in for another barnstormer。 But then around halfway through it just fizzled out to the point where it felt like it was written by somebody else。 All three new characters turned in to pointless filler content to progress the story and the plot pacing was just awful。 Some parts where so cliché and cheesy that's it's annoying me thinking about it。 。。。more

I enjoyed most of this book a great deal, but the climactic fight scene was perhaps a bit too chaotic。 Too many cases of bullets simply missing Clarissa, among other things。I am having problems with Amos and his very odd personality。 I can see how he might empathize with someone else who has trouble NOT being violent, but still。。。Also the scenes with the Anna, the minister, were just very odd。 Using a preacher as a deus ex machina in several scenes felt strange。Still, the main characters and the I enjoyed most of this book a great deal, but the climactic fight scene was perhaps a bit too chaotic。 Too many cases of bullets simply missing Clarissa, among other things。I am having problems with Amos and his very odd personality。 I can see how he might empathize with someone else who has trouble NOT being violent, but still。。。Also the scenes with the Anna, the minister, were just very odd。 Using a preacher as a deus ex machina in several scenes felt strange。Still, the main characters and the main story kept me turning the pages, and I'm very interested in the next story。 。。。more

This may be the most compelling book in the series so far: A still-broader range of point-of-view characters makes the action of this story come alive as if seen in 3-D。 The fate of the solar system hangs in the balance, and yet the authors never lose sight of the personal, intimate stakes that make their characters interesting。 'Abadon's Gate' also begins to explore some of the big philosophical questions and ideas humankind has struggled with for ages, and probably will keep wondering about no This may be the most compelling book in the series so far: A still-broader range of point-of-view characters makes the action of this story come alive as if seen in 3-D。 The fate of the solar system hangs in the balance, and yet the authors never lose sight of the personal, intimate stakes that make their characters interesting。 'Abadon's Gate' also begins to explore some of the big philosophical questions and ideas humankind has struggled with for ages, and probably will keep wondering about no matter how far we travel into the void: What is the nature of good and evil? Was there a creator, and is there still some higher power who cares about humanity? Can religion evolve to meet the changing perceptions and scientific understanding, and the needs of people who've left Earth behind--or never knew it to begin with? (I find it a little disheartening to think that organized religion is still a 'thing' in this future, but it makes for some interesting, if not always dramatic, story stuff。)Highly recommended! 。。。more

Such an amazing series! This one started a bit slow but picked up speed halfway through, to a very satisfying conclusion。

General thoughts: not much happens in this instalment。 I can see why it gets lower reviews。 However, as always, some PoVs just steal the show and keep you wanted to read more。 For me, Bull was clearly the person who I rooted for the most and that i most enjoyed。 The rest was ok。 i wish we got some different Povs from Holden's crew just to know and see a bit more of them。 GHolden is an ok protegaonist but i always find myself not particularly intereseted in his story line。 I will continue with th General thoughts: not much happens in this instalment。 I can see why it gets lower reviews。 However, as always, some PoVs just steal the show and keep you wanted to read more。 For me, Bull was clearly the person who I rooted for the most and that i most enjoyed。 The rest was ok。 i wish we got some different Povs from Holden's crew just to know and see a bit more of them。 GHolden is an ok protegaonist but i always find myself not particularly intereseted in his story line。 I will continue with the series and hopefully some favourite characters return in the future。 so far, so good。 Solid book although it pales in comparison with my highlight of the series which is book 2。 。。。more

For my money (though I got this from the library for free) this series seems to get better book-to-book。 Leviathan was great, Caliban’s war (who is Caliban?) was better, and definitely benefited from the increased number of perspectives the story was told through。 Abaddon’s Gate (who is Abaddon?) was another step up。 Having the story divided up into chapters from the perspectives of 4 different characters again certainly helped shift the story along and created a more well-rounded narrative。Th For my money (though I got this from the library for free) this series seems to get better book-to-book。 Leviathan was great, Caliban’s war (who is Caliban?) was better, and definitely benefited from the increased number of perspectives the story was told through。 Abaddon’s Gate (who is Abaddon?) was another step up。 Having the story divided up into chapters from the perspectives of 4 different characters again certainly helped shift the story along and created a more well-rounded narrative。This feels almost like GoT in space as far as the petty human bickering and power-grabs playing out in the face on an extinction-level threat。 The slightly higher death-count also added to that comparison。The story was compelling enough that towards the end I almost pulled an all-nighter to finish it, which (at my age and with a small child) would not have been a good idea! 。。。more

While entertaining, it wasn’t as amazing as the first two。 It was quite a slow start and middle。 It only got action packed and funny in the last 100 pages。 The last chapter (pg。 503, to be exact) had me howling! I really adore the Roci crew! Also, Amos and his nicknames…wish he could give me one 🤗

Another solid entry into The Expanse but I didn't LOVE the new POV's that we got。 It's a cool concept that each book brings in so many new voices but between Bull, Anna and others I wasn't super attached to them。 The main crew is always great of course and the plot was fun and different。 Good book overall! Some do say that it's by far the weakest part of The Expanse cycle。If that's true, I can't wait to read the remaining books as I really had a good time with "Abaddon's Gate"。 W/o spoiling too much:1。 Holden is far less irritating than before :)2。 This installment "lacks scale" a bit - I mean: there's a tense action and you never get bored, but the background scenery, even if still intriguing, is not as spectacularly epic。3。 There's one thing I didn't like - the initial plan of CM。 That was sooo Some do say that it's by far the weakest part of The Expanse cycle。If that's true, I can't wait to read the remaining books as I really had a good time with "Abaddon's Gate"。 W/o spoiling too much:1。 Holden is far less irritating than before :)2。 This installment "lacks scale" a bit - I mean: there's a tense action and you never get bored, but the background scenery, even if still intriguing, is not as spectacularly epic。3。 There's one thing I didn't like - the initial plan of CM。 That was sooo unrealistic, that it would not be possible to execute even in 2021 ;)4。 New characters are in fact interesting, but not as vivid and unique as Awasarala。 More like Bobby。Good stuff, good ending (although Amos didn't keep one promise)。Things are developing in a truly interesting manner。 。。。more

Well。。。 Wauw。 This is just。。。 Wauw。The third novel in this cross-genre blend is again so amazingly done。 Grand intergalactic conflicts combined with the smallest of human problems。 I think that's what makes it so great。 Character-driven。 How you care about characters while there's a whole mysterious galaxy out there。 This explosive sequel is making me want to read even more of this series。 The excitement is overwhelming。 Great stuff, nothing to comment。 Well。。。 Wauw。 This is just。。。 Wauw。The third novel in this cross-genre blend is again so amazingly done。 Grand intergalactic conflicts combined with the smallest of human problems。 I think that's what makes it so great。 Character-driven。 How you care about characters while there's a whole mysterious galaxy out there。 This explosive sequel is making me want to read even more of this series。 The excitement is overwhelming。 Great stuff, nothing to comment。 。。。more

I found this book took me longer to get through than the others and I didn't like some of the other introduced characters。 I found myself bored by some of their long internal dialogues and skimming/skipping through it。 But this just goes to show how invested I've become with the crew of the Roci。 There is a host of very broad and different opinions in this book with their own merit and at this point, I've aligned myself fully with the crew of the Roci which means seeing any disagreeing parties a I found this book took me longer to get through than the others and I didn't like some of the other introduced characters。 I found myself bored by some of their long internal dialogues and skimming/skipping through it。 But this just goes to show how invested I've become with the crew of the Roci。 There is a host of very broad and different opinions in this book with their own merit and at this point, I've aligned myself fully with the crew of the Roci which means seeing any disagreeing parties as the enemy which means James Corey has succeeded。 The frustration I feel from the motives and actions from some of these characters are probably echoed by the main cast which makes this book much harder to read in my opinion。 I'm excited to see what the ending of this book leads to。 。。。more
